Get acquainted with the technicalities of the orthodontics treatment

When a person is going through an orthodontic treatment or even if one just for knowledge, it sometimes becomes very important for an individual to be acquainted with the technical terms which are associated with them so that they are not left out behind in the race. Some of the different types of products which are used are as follows:

1. Arch wire: It is a kind of wire which is engaged in the orthodontic attachments and is fixed to the crown of two or more teeth so that the tooth movement can be guided properly.

2. Bond: It is the seal which is created by the orthodontic cement in order to keep the appliances in their place.

3. Bracket: These are the orthodontic attachment to a tooth, by the bonding or banding process. It is used for the purpose of engaging the arch wire. They can be fabricated from metal, plastic or even ceramic.

4. Photographic mirrors: The photographic mirrors are used in case of the intra oral photography. Titanium made prodontholliger mirror is available. Titanium offers a better definition to the reflected image as they are better in brightness, clarity and sharpness.

5. Coil spring: It is spring which is made to fit between the brackets and even over the arch wires to make an opening between the teeth. These springs can also be used to close the openings which are present in the teeth.

6. Orthodontic elastomeric: The elastomers for the conventional Kesling- type tooth polishers are usually inelastic and work as the finishing devices. The orthodontic elastomeric are new materials which are found to make greater movements in teeth in comparison to the conventional materials.

7. Facemask: The orthodontic facemask is a kind of an orthodontic appliance which is typically used in correcting the under bites of the patients by pulling forward and assisting the growth of the upper jaw and then allowing it to catch up the size of the lower jaw. Usually they are worn for around 12-22 hours in a day though around 14 to 16 hours are enough to correct an under bite.

8. Impressions: Impressions is the process of making a model of the teeth. This is done by biting into a soft material that hardens up to form a mould of the teeth.

9. Elastic tie (o- ring): The elastic tie or the orthodontic O- Ring is a tiny rubber band which is made to fit around the brackets so that the arch wires are held in their respective places. Very often they are often referred to as “colours”.

10. Herbst appliance: It is a removable or fixed appliance which has been designed to overcome the problems of overbite.
